
Everything we eat and drink has to enter the mouth, therefore oral hygiene is very important and as kids, we are taught how to brush and floss after every meal and before and after bed. Flossing is vital, as this removes trapped food that can accumulate between the teeth and if you are not so bothered with flossing, this could lead to tooth decay and gum infection.
Correct Toothbrush & Toothpaste
It is important to use a toothbrush with a small head and most dentists recommend soft bristles, with a varied brushing technique. The longer you take brushing your teeth, the better and gentle circular movements with some variation will ensure you don’t miss anything. Choose a toothpaste that contains fluoride, as this is known to prevent tooth decay. Double rinsing is a good idea, as is using an antiseptic mouthwash. Feeding Bacteria
If you develop plaque, this feeds oral bacteria and that leads to cavities; one cannot remove all bacteria from the oral cavity but with correct brushing and flossing, a great portion is removed. Carrying a small bottle of antiseptic mouthwash is a smart move and swilling after drinks and snacks will really help removes food for bacteria, thus preventing tooth decay.
Regular Check-Ups
Every 6 months is the right frequency to schedule a dental check-up, which gives the dentist the chance to closely examine your teeth and gums, while a deep clean is also recommended. The resident hygienist can deep clean and polish your teeth, which is recommended when you have your check-up.
